The FDA’s Advisory Committee on Food and Drug Safety (ACFDA) released a report on the safety of Viagra, its generic equivalent, on September 28, 2023, and announced that it has issued a public safety alert for its erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, which will be available over-the-counter (OTC).
The warning will provide a clear warning about the risks of heart attack, stroke, vision loss, hearing loss, and other health risks associated with Viagra, including the ability of Viagra to cause a sudden, potentially fatal heart attack or stroke.
The ACFDA’s report was based on a review of studies that compared Viagra to sildenafil citrate and found that Viagra was associated with a 25 percent greater risk of serious cardiovascular events.
According to the ACFDA, the FDA’s recommendation is to “modify the ACFDA’s recommendation for sildenafil citrate (100 milligrams) to avoid serious cardiovascular events and increase the risk of serious heart disease.”
The ACFDA is concerned that the warning might be misconstrued to mean Viagra will be linked to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
The ACFDA said the warning is “part of the ACFDA’s broader recommendations to ensure that individuals and their families do not risk death or harm from heart disease.”
The ACFDA also said it is concerned that the warning would not have been added to the ACFDA’s “best-in-class safety and quality standards” and that the FDA has not yet decided whether to add it to the ACFDA’s recommendations.
The FDA has stated it does not plan to add Viagra to the ACFDA’s overall safety and quality standards, but has recommended that the ACFDA refer patients to a cardiologist if a patient is at risk of serious cardiovascular events.
